Tinago Falls in Iligan, Mindanao

This is an entry in my Philippines 2010 travel diary. This travel diary is written as one, so it may be long winded at times and include references to things that are not general knowledge. Thanks for reading!

After getting a shave and a pretty unflattering haircut in Cagayan de Oro I made the short one and a half hour drive to Iligan. I read in my guide book that Iligan had some beautiful waterfalls so I decided to stay the night and visit the falls today.

On my way to the falls today around noon I stopped for some lunch, gigataan nga langka, or jackfruit cooked in coconut milk. Some fruits here are used as vegetables when they’re not quite ripe and this is a really good meal. It was only 18 pesos for the rice and jackfruit dish.

I ended up staying in San Francisco an extra day. I spent the day swimming in the pool, trying to upload some posts at the really slow local internet cafe, and singing karaoke with the friends I made who worked at the resort. It was a nice relaxing day.

I went to sleep but didn’t sleep well because some ants somehow found their way into my room and every few minutes there was a new one on me tickling me. It was really frustrating. When I finally did wake up it was close to 11am and, after a quick swim, I checked out. When I left my room, I found out that the mattress outside my door was a popular hangout for gargantuan insects.

Arriving In Mindanao

Monday night I slept in Tacloban at the Welcome Home Pensione. I went to pick up my pants around 5:45pm but they were closed so I went to Jollibee and ate dinner. There was an upstairs dining area with a huge window that overlooked Tacloban port – watching the sunset was nice.

Borongan –> Guiuan –> Tacloban

Saturday I left Borongan, Samar and headed south toward my next destination, Guiuan. The road south (and north) of Borongan is terrible. Pete, the owner of Pirate’s Cove, told me that back in the 80s the road running along the east coast of Samar was new and claimed that corrupt officials have been pocketing all the money to fix the roads. In any event, the road was terrible.

There were a few beautiful views but I couldn’t capture them because my camera battery was dead. I made up for it on my next ride though, as you will see below. Something terrible happened though, something that I am hesitant to write down because putting it in words causes me intense pain and it’s something I’d sooner forget than relive.

Thursday I finally left Tacloban. My pants won’t be ready until Monday the 10th. I left Tacloban and headed north up to the San Juanico bridge. It’s a pretty amazing bridge, I’ll get more photos of it when I cross back over on Monday.
