My Blog’s New Look – Making A Child Theme of Twenty Ten

I realized after a recent upgrade to WordPress 3.0 and after changing my blog’s address that I was tired of my old blog’s look. I was really impressed with the new default theme for 3.0: Twenty Ten. It’s simple, aesthetically pleasing, and supports all the new features of 3.0.

Since my new job requires me to learn a lot of PHP and HTML I’ve used some of my new skills in developing a child theme for Twenty Ten. Child themes are great! They allow you to basically extend and customize an existing theme in a way that won’t break if the theme gets an update.

Changing My WordPress Blog URL and Using Lighttpd to Redirect

My blog’s old domain, law-family.org and bradford.law-family.org, are set to expire in November. The reason I initially registered the law-family.org domain was to create a family website. My familylighttpd_logo traditionally has communicated by mass email and reply-all conversations and I thought it would help to give them something different. They rarely used it however so I decided to simply focus on my own blog, that’s why it’s now theblawblog.com. Since I have several articles that get regular hits from search engines, I worried that my articles wouldn’t be very visible. I decided to try writing up some redirect rules for my old domain in the lighttpd config file so that anyone going to my old blog links would be redirected to their new addresses.

Fitting A Solid State Disk Into Lenovo S10 (AT&T)

I bought a Lenovo S10 for $188 to take with me on my upcoming trip to the Philippines. It was a good deal, the model I ended up getting has

  • 1.6GHz Atom Processor
  • 1GB Ram (room for 2)
  • 160GB HDD
  • Built-in 3G Modem
  • GPS
  • 802.11 B/G

In fact, I soon found out that this was the model that AT&T is selling for around $160 WITH a 2 year contract.  I installed the following upgrades:

  • 30GB OCZ Vertex SSD
  • Bluetooth Module

Success! Building Transmission 1.80 From Source on SheevaPlug

I saw the announcement on the Transmission website of the release of transmission 1.80 and I got really excited about some of the features such as tracker-less torrents and magnet links.  I was running 1.51 which is what’s in the Ubuntu Jaunty repos.  Unfortunately I can’t upgrade my SheevaPlug to any Ubuntu distro beyond 9.04 because there is some funny business on how they’re compiling the arm packages for future releases. Eventually I’ll switch over to Debian but I really don’t feel like mucking around with the serial console on my plug.

Bash Script for Sitelutions.com DynDNS

I use sitelutions.com for my websites and subdomains; I love using sitelutions because it’s the best free solution I found for my servers with dynamic IPs. The only problem is that there’s not very many dyndns update clients available. So, I tried my hand at scripting and this is what I’ve come up with.
